We soon forget the mythical North Pole that we have all grown to love as a child, and like any celebrated city, we find out that this place too has a dark underside. Claus, and even the elves are turned inside out as he finds out that they are human, with all the weaknesses and issues that occur in our day to day lives. When I first picked up this novel, it was out of curiosity to see if Lewis could pull off a crime novel in a place that we think of as a dream land. He transports the reader to a place that becomes one of the characters itself and he keeps you guessing until the very end.

This is a great book to lose yourself in, especially with the holidays here. The story opens with Max Sneed, a retired police detective being informed of the murder of Vlad Volsky, the Premier of the North Pole and Santa's right hand man. From there, we start digging into the mystery which quickly turns out to more then anyone expected. What makes this story so much fun is that the North Pole isn't what we expect.

Dark and dirty.

The book takes a serious look at life at Santa's city, but has so much humor and charm and never takes its self to serious. The list of suspects is wde ranging and all have motives. The characters are well-rounded and believable. The conspiracies and motives all are sound and well explained. The story has a number of well executed flashbacks which show the readers Santa's backstory and Max Sneed's past problems with the victim.

This is really a great book and a must read for the holidays. Not your typical christmas story but certainly one of the best.

The tale is darkly nostalgic, somewhere between a supernatural mystery and the year you discovered there is no Santa Claus. Lewis's world building is spot on, his characters believable and complex.

The Blood in Snowflake Garden (Paperback)

We are drawn, along with his reluctant hero, into North Pole politics, the affairs of disgruntled elves, and an understanding of a disillusioned, broken Santa who is nonetheless sympathetic. Lewis strikes exactly the right balance between humor and suspense, then adds a sprinkling of magic to the mix. The cover is beautiful too. Mar 26, Tiffiney Smith added it. Provocative, colorful plot twists. Could easily see this made into a movie.

Good book! Mar 06, K. Joyner rated it it was amazing Shelves: own. I bought a copy of this book from the author at Hypericon a couple of years ago. It was worth the purchase! Even though I suspected a thing or two as far as motive and character movements, in the end I wasn't spot on the nose and that's excellent when it comes to a decent murder mystery.

Lewis' writing style is fresh and articulate - not dry and boring. Running gags and witty banter gave what could have been a very dour story that lighthearted spice needed to make things even more entertaining.

Philadelphus 'Minnesota Snowflake'

A I bought a copy of this book from the author at Hypericon a couple of years ago. And the characters with all their secrets moved and breathed in the detailed political and social world Lewis created with his idea of the land of Father Christmas. There were only a couple of minor things. The book's formatting made me wince sometimes.

Now I only believe in taking away "review points" when formatting is severe, and in this case it only made me lose suspension of belief once or twice. They've been around since the start of the printing press, and they may be around for years to come.

But speaking of typesetting, it did annoy me that this book relied on what people are coming to think of as a normal size. The cover for the book I admit was fitting - and you come to realize just how fitting the more you read of the story - but it also left a bit to be desired I felt. But this is also a minor detail and is only getting mentioned because the thought didn't leave me throughout reading the book.

The only thing that actually marred the experience was the idealistic behavior of at least one of the characters if not two or three.
